Dedicated to the joyful noise of the Card faithful

U of L 99 DePaul 54

There is a good reason the once proud DePaul  basketball program– the program of George Mikan and  Mark Aquirre and HOF coach Ray Meyer–now serves as bottom-feeder for the  Big East.

They are quite bad.  Yes, middle- of- the- pack- SEC bad.

But it was still a bit mind-boggling to see the Cards bounce back in such schizophrenic fashion– from the fresh 33 pt drubbing at Notre Dame to their own 45 pt dismantling of the Demons at home in the Hall.

Good shooting instantly cures a lot of woes for any team–the Cards shot 59% for the game and drilled a  season-high 18 three-balls in this runaway by the Cards to  their highest point total this season.

This game everyone piled on, but Preston Knowles was the stand-out, popping a season high 19 pts in just 13 minutes–with 5 for 7 treys!  His brilliance  overshadowed a double-double by Earl Clark (almost a triple-double- 8 A’s too.)

Never Restin' Preston brought his O this game, pouring in 19 pts in just 13 min, with, umm, 0 assists, but who's counting?

Reggie Delk got the starting nod, subbing for the wrist-sore T Will. He made the most of it, with 10 pts on a perfect night from the field and stripe--and added 3 RB's and 0 TO's.

Yes, E5, you did good. Earl flirted with a triple-double...but he still loves his 3-ball, too. Here was his one "make" in 5 trey attempts.

Notes of interest in pre-game info from U of L:  The Cards are unbeaten this season in only four cases –when they:

  • they shoot a better % from the field than their opponent
  • make over 7 three-pointers
  • lead at halftime
  • lead with 5 minutes to go in the game.

In other words, when we shoot reasonably well, and stay focused through the ends of each half.

But… how does this erratic team learn to shoot well?

At the post-game presser, Pitino  emphasized –as he has many times this season–that the recent poor shooting has been the  direct consequence of poor ball movement.  Lack of crisp, productive ball movement.

Today, from the opening bell, every Card fan in the Hall could readily see the ball movement was much, much better.  There was a obvious sense of focused intensity on both offense and defense by the Cards.

Pitino  traced the good overall game performance to good practice sessions:  “The team  had two great practices, probably the best two of the season and we got the fruits of our labor. Yesterday was the first time all season I thought we could be a damn good basketball team.”

The other big news swirled around Reginald Delk starting in place of T Will and the “deep bruise” to T Will’s “forearm” (per U of L pre-game info.)

Forearm?  I sat at press row–and it looked to me like T’s wrist was tightly taped down his arm about 4 “.

At the post-game presser, Pitino said that he played T Will some even with the injury “because otherwise it stiffens…he has some tendinitis in it.”

Usually tendinitis is in the wrist–not a forearm…

Also this, from Pitino: “He took a fall right on it yesterday in practice, as bad as I’ve seen, we thought he’d broke it.  But he should be fine for Providence.”

Folks…this could be an issue.  Because it’s obvious T Will can’t shoot at all now–he didn’t even attempt a shot against the Demons.

For us to win against good teams, we need both T and E5 clicking, like there were during our perfect January.

he didn't even take shot in the first half. In the second, he opened up, canning 3 of 5, and dishing 3 A's to only 1 TO. Yea!

After the Notre Dame debacle,  Pitino played some mind games with the guys.  He stripped them of all their Louisville -branded work out stuff.

Preston Knowles: “They took away our practice gear and we practiced in shorts and T-shirts.  We disgraced our name. ”

With 4 minutes to go, and a 40+ lead, there was a near Lee Steiden sighting. As the student section started up the chant for the walk-on,  and with many of the players chiming in…Lee stood.  And this was probably his undoing. Because Pitino pointedly refused to acknowledge the chants–or even look down the bench.

Maybe another day, Lee.

Also, Sam4gtr is a great young photographer with the school paper, is a card-carrying member of the Card Chronicle like myself, and has allowed us to view his photos too:

The game was almost unwatchable, Frank. If something else good was on, like, say, “Mr Belvedere,” I would have switched the channel.

Nice shots from photographer, Sam, again and again. I want to say that he’s learning his craft, but it’s obvious he’s way past that.
